Overview

Venture Café Tokyo is an innovation community that connects entrepreneurs, investors and researchers to “Make Things Happen.” Established in 2018 at Toranomon Hills as the first Asian node of the Boston-born Venture Café network, it hosts the weekly flagship “Thursday Gathering” for learning and networking. The program now extends to Tsukuba, Nagoya, Gifu and Osaka-Ibaraki, where recurring events such as TSUKUBA CONNÉCT and NAGOYA CONNÉCT link regional ecosystems with the world through partnerships with local governments and universities.

Initiative details

This program is a global open-innovation initiative that rapidly matches Japanese SMEs with advanced manufacturing capabilities to Australian startups seeking prototyping and market entry, with the goal of signing collaboration MoUs and launching PoCs. After an online preparatory session aligns their challenges and technologies, a one-week module in Sydney refines collaboration ideas through workshops and produces draft MoUs. During the subsequent interval and a one-week module in Tokyo, those drafts are finalized into formal MoUs, manufacturability and risk are verified, and full-scale PoC execution is prepared. The program targets at least three signed MoUs and the launch of PoCs in half of the projects during the agreement period.
