Overview

The General Incorporated Association WE AT is a startup-support organization founded on 16 May 2024 by seven entities—The University of Tokyo, Tokyo Science University, Kyoto University, Hakuhodo Inc., Sumitomo Life Insurance Company, Canon Marketing Japan Inc., and UTokyo Innovation Platform Co., Ltd. “WE AT” aim to accumulate natural capital, human capital, and social capital, which form the basis of a well-being economy, keeping in mind the categories of the "Well-Being Framework" proposed by the OECD. The association supports startup businesses and projects of companies and research institutions that contribute to accumulation.

Initiative details

This project targets social entrepreneurs—start-ups that tackle social challenges—and pursues two goals: ①build a clear support system that helps start-ups expand overseas, and ②create a nationwide mechanism that keeps uncovering promising local start-ups. WE AT will partner with overseas support groups, investors, and major companies to set up a global support line offering business meetings, investor pitches, and PoC projects. Know-how from this line will be distilled into a concise playbook future start-ups can use. Simultaneously, WE AT will run global-expansion events in key Japanese hub cities, discover high-potential social-impact start-ups, and funnel them into the support line. By continuously cycling through discovery ⇆ ecosystem building ⇆ individual support ⇆ overseas launch, WE AT will help social founders grow worldwide, broaden Japan’s start-up base, and ultimately produce Tokyo-born unicorns that succeed on the global stage.
